iPhone 4 makes Journey to Outer Space recording Amazing Videos!

by Andrew Macedo on October 18, 2010

iPhone 4, the latest phone by Apple which has a extremely great camera, has now reached the sky. A father and son from Brooklyn, New York had been successful in sending an iPhone at 100,000 feet above the ground to the upper stratosphere with the help of a weather balloon along with recording the blackness of space. They managed to capturing the whole tour with the help of iPhone with external HD camera up to the maximum burst point of the helium balloon. The balloon busted after 19 miles journey and the iPhone landed around 30 miles away from its launch point with the help of a parachute. Amazing, isn’t it? Check the video after a break.

The camera and iPhone were protected from low temperatures (around 60F below zero)  by wrapping the devices with hand-warmers and then enclosing it in styrofoam packing materials. This whole wrap was then attached to the weather helium balloon. The balloon was launched from Newburgh in upstate New York. In just 72 minutes, the balloon rose around 19 miles. They also used a custom app to capture GPS information and trace the device. Just have a look at the video and the beauty of the sky, it really makes us feel the sky.

The complete flight was around 90 minutes as the balloon came back with the speed of 150 mph. After the success of the project, the father and son are working on to release a guide so that others can also try this amazing experience. Earlier, there had been Android phone send to space but this journey of iPhone 4, really makes it special and worth having one. Stop making it seem like the iPhone took the images or had a hand in the filming. A stand-alone HD camcorder took the video with no help from the iPhone whatsoever. All the iPhone did was provide GPS coordinates and it couldn’t even do that without the help of an app. Sorry to burst your bubble. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/12/science/space/12weather.html

The balloon never made it to space. It only made it 19 miles. Space is generally considered at an altitude of 62 miles.
